October 8, 2024
While conference play just got underway for the men's soccer team it already has the makings of a season to remember as they recently improved to 9-2 on the season with a 3-0 home win over Santa Rosa on Friday.
"Today will be a test," said head coach Josh Bradley before the game against Santa Rosa. "Santa Rosa is always good and they were in the Final Four last year. Today will be an eye opener and a litmus test."
Jesus Rios Jr., Juan Gallegos, and Jasha Vaszary all scored goals while Franco Borba recorded a shutout with six saves in the Big 8 Conference opening win that will be sure to open eyes of opponents in the Big 8 Conference. Juan Gallegos on the season is among the state leaders in two different categories as he leads the Mustangs with seven goals and eight assists. Vaszary is not far behind his teammate as he has scored six goals to go with six assists.
"The season so far has been good, and the team has grown," said Bradley about the 8-2 start to the season that saw them win their first eight games before two tough losses including one in stoppage time to Evergreen who is currently ranked as the top team in the nation. "I think that the Big 8 Conference is different, and the competition level is different. To me it's one of the best conferences in California."
With nine wins already this season they have won as many games this year as they did over the past two seasons combined. With their next win they will have a double-digit win total for the first time since the 2019 season when they went 13-7-4 and made it to the third round of the CCCAA NorCal Regionals.
Big 8 Conference play continues for the Mustangs today as they go on the road to take on Folsom Lake before returning home on Friday for a 4:00pm game against Modesto.
