Coach Molly Hummel enters her 15th year directing the Delta College volleyball program. In 2023 and 2022 she was named the Northern California Coach of the Year and the Big 8 Coach of the Year. She also received a national honor from the American Volleyball Coaches Association and was named the Western Regional Coach of the Year for 2023. Molly is only the third coach in California to receive this honor. In 2024 she again was honored by the AVCA and the United State Marine Corp. with a Battles Won Award for overcoming health issues to return to the court and coaching of the 2024 team. The 2024 team finished with a record of 26-5 and for most of the year was ranked #1 in the state until 3 starters went out with injuries. The 2023 team finished with a record of 27-2 and a fifth-place finish in the state tournament. The 2022 team finished with a record of 26-4, a trip to the State Final Four, and a third-place finish in the State of California. In 2017 Hummel’s team reached new heights when she guided the Mustangs to the state championship game finishing as the top team in Northern California. In the history of Delta volleyball, the 2017 team matched the highest finish in Mustang history at No. 2 in the state.
In the past 14 years, Hummel’s teams have a record of 271-87 winning more than 75% of their matches. During Hummel’s coaching tenure, the Mustangs have reached the state playoffs thirteen times and finished in the Elite Eight on 6 occasions. Hummel has four times been voted the Big 8 Conference Coach of the Year and her teams have won four Big 8 championships (2014, 2015, 2022, 2023). The Big 8 Conference is recognized as the most prominent and competitive league in the State of California. Hummel is a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association and the California Community College Volleyball Coaches Association.
The 2024, 2023 and 2022 teams produced All-Americans, All-State players, League MVPs, and 14 All-Conference selections.
In women’s volleyball history, Delta is the most decorated program in the State and has made more state tournament appearances, now 24, than any other North Region college. Since taking over the program, 31 of Hummel’s players have earned scholarships to 4-year universities. Hummel has coached 3 All-American players, including outside hitter Kiyah Irby in 2022-2023, setter Carisa Brock in 2023, and outside hitter Amilya Thompson in 2017-2018. Both Amilya and Kiyah were 2 time All-Americans and went on to play at Fresno State and University of the Pacific.
As a student-athlete, the Stockton-raised Hummel helped Lincoln High claim back-to-back San Joaquin Section and Northern California Division 1 championships in 1998 and 1999. She went on to attend the NCAA Division 1 University of the Pacific (2000-2004) and played outsider hitter before transitioning to become one of the first liberos when the defensive position was created at the collegiate level. She was named a Big West Conference All-Academic Scholar Athlete. Hummel was also voted by her teammates as the Most Inspirational Player. Hummel played in four NCAA tournaments as a member of the Pacific Tigers. In 2018 Hummel, along with her 2000 Pacific team, was inducted into the Pacific Athletic Hall of Fame. In 2024, Hummel was also inducted into the Lincoln High School Hall of Fame.Hummel began her varsity prep coaching career at her alma mater Lincoln High School and directed the team’s 2005 league title run. Collegiately, she coached at Pacific for two years (2007-2008) and coached at Delta as an assistant under then-head coach Michaela Reyes. In her time as an assistant, Delta advanced to the Elite Eight state tournament three times. Hummel has a history of coaching at the club level for many of the local area clubs. Hummel is passionate about giving back to her community. She conducts volleyball camps and clinics for younger players and is involved in Community outreach programs to promote the sport of volleyball.
In addition to coaching, Hummel is an Assistant Professor at Delta College. She has a bachelor's degree in liberal studies from the University of the Pacific and a master's degree in Kinesiology from St. Mary’s College. She is married to Kipp Hummel who works as a physical education teacher and an assistant volleyball coach at Delta. She has two bonus daughters, Jordyn (22) who graduated from Boise State and is now attending nursing school, Keely (19) who plays volleyball at Fresno State, a daughter Emmy age (7), and a son Beau age (4)
