Delta’s Johnson named top coach

Gina Johnson has been rewarded for leading the Delta College women's basketball team to its highest winning percentage in school history.

But the honor is bittersweet.

Johnson was named the California Community College Women's Basketball Coaches Association's Northern Region coach of the year as the Mustangs compiled a 29-1 record and were ranked No. 1 in the state. But they did not get a chance to capture their first state title when the championships were canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Johnson, who has coached at Delta for 24 years, has won the award three times, including 2006 and 2015. She said she takes it as a compliment to the entire coaching staff and the players.
