Both Mustang squads faced an adverse-filled 2023-24 season with countless hours on the road, in practice, and on the diamond. Through the lows, these teams dug deep to have stellar seasons and prove some of the best junior college ball is being played in the 209.
Here's a wrap-up on SJDC baseball and softball seasons that ended with two deep runs in the 3C2A Baseball and Softball championships.
'An emotional rollercoaster' for Delta Baseball
At the start of the season, Reed Peters and the rest of Delta College baseball staff knew they had their work cut out for them. The 17-year head coach would have to play yet another season without a home field with Nick Cecchetti Baseball Field being limited to just practice due to safety issues.
Not having a home took a backseat to the things the Mustangs had to deal with once the program was rocked once more in December of 2023 when the school announced the passing of sophomore pitcher Will Wentworth. Wentworth committed suicide in early December marking the second passing of a Delta College student-athlete that year.
He was with the program for around a year and a half, redshirting his freshman year and gearing up to be a key part of Delta's bullpen this year.
